Carnival of Animals by Saint-Saens narrated by Gloria Greer

There will be a special Celebration of Music airing this Sunday, July 5th at 6:30 PM, Pacific time on NBC Palm Springs and Facebook Live. The Waring International Piano Competition presents “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens.  This fun musical menagerie features three virtuoso Waring winners and the late award-winning journalist / TV host Gloria Greer narrates the Ogden Nash poems before each musical piece.  NBC Palm Springs Sandie Newton hosts the evening.  The music runs just under 25 minutes.   This was filmed live at the McCallum Theatre on November 5, 2014.

As Chairman of the Board Peggy Cravens says, “This is a wonderful way of sharing some beautiful music with the community. We are grateful to NBC Palm Springs, Palm Springs Life and to Frank Goldstin with MOMENTOUS for being our partners in this.”

Considered one of the top piano competitions in the United States, The Waring was born on the campus of the College of the Desert in 1978 and founded by Joanna Hodges, then Keyboard Studies Chair of COD.  The Waring’s mission is to expand the role of the piano in contemporary live with live performances, free outreach concerts to the community and to schools, as well as to nurture the career paths of gifted young pianists with scholarships and performance opportunities via the competition that occurs every other year.
