Application Procedures and Rules & Regulations

Important dates to remember:

General Eligibility & Information

  • The 2025 Junior Division of the Palm Springs International Piano Competition is open to pianists of any nationality who have reached the age of 13 by April 11, 2025, at 12am, who have not reached the age of 18 by the conclusion of the competition on April 21, 2025. PSIPC does not discriminate against any applicant based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, or disability.
  • Previous first prize winners of the Junior Division of the former Virginia Waring International Piano Competition (Concerto or Solo Division Winners) are not eligible to compete in the 2025 Palm Springs International Piano Competition.
  • Admission to the Competition will be granted by a preliminary panel of 3 distinguished judges.
  • The Junior Division (ages 13-17) of the Palm Springs International Piano Competition will be held from April 11-21, 2025. All live solo rounds will take place at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs, CA. Concerto finals with orchestra will be held on April 21, 2025, at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, CA.
  • Competitors are responsible for paying their own travel expenses to and from Palm Springs.
  • Competitors must arrive by April 11, 2025, and should plan to stay for the entire duration of the competition.
  • If you are not a US citizen, you may need special travel documents which can often take a significant amount of time. Please contact the nearest US Embassy or US Consulate for information regarding required documentation for entry into the United States. PSIPC cannot provide applicants with entry VISAs to the US. 
  • All competition winners must give credit in future publicity for all awards won in the Palm Springs International Piano Competition.
  • The competition reserves the right, without payment of fees, to record and distribute competition recordings for media and other purposes (including online and social media) and to televise, broadcast, film, record, videotape, photograph, or live stream all stages of the competition, prize performances, and concerts.
  • By applying to the competition, the applicant agrees to abide by all the rules and regulations of the Palm Springs International Piano Competition.
  • The Competition reserves the right to make necessary updates and revisions to the rules and regulations, as agreed upon by the Artistic Committee.
  • Each competitor (plus one parent if needed) will be offered host-family lodging, local transportation, and reasonable access to a practice piano.  This housing is provided free of charge.
  • Competitors who decline host-family housing will be responsible for their own lodging and transportation, with limited access to a practice piano.
  • Applicants must complete the Application Form and Cover Sheet. No repertoire changes or substitutions are permitted for the duration of the competition after January 10, 2025. Any repertoire changes prior to January 10 must be approved by the Artistic Committee.
  • All competitors will perform their chosen programs in their entirety from memory, up to the permitted time limit. Competitors may choose the order of performance of their program for each round.
  • All performances will be strictly timed by an official PSIPC monitor (time limits are for actual performance time and do not include breaks between pieces)
  • Semi-Final Concerto Round will be with Second Piano Accompaniment. Competitors must perform with the provided official PSIPC accompanists and will be provided with one 30-minute rehearsal.
  • All prizes will be awarded, and no ties will be allowed. Additional performance awards may be announced at the conclusion of the competition. Winners are expected to honor all commitments resulting from their prizes and awards.
  • All decisions of the jury will be final. Written comments from the judges will be sent to all contestants’ teachers at the conclusion of the competition.
  • All live rounds of the competition are open to the public.

Rules & Regulations

  • The opening date for submission of applications is August 15, 2024. The closing date for all applications is November 15, 2024. All applicants will be notified of their admission to the competition no later than January 10, 2025.
  • ALL application materials MUST be submitted electronically, including Pre-Screening video audition recordings, to the official PSIPC website portal at getacceptd.com.  No DVDs or CDs will be permitted. Do not include your name on the uploaded video files.
  • All applications must include a high-resolution color headshot and a copy of a valid passport (or other government issued proof of age).
  • All applicants should retain a copy of their application materials and all accompanying documents. All applicants will receive email confirmation once their application is complete. PSIPC will only contact you prior to this if your application is missing required documentation or materials.
  • A non-refundable application fee of US $130 must be received by all applicants. (Please see Cover Page for information regarding payment methods)
  • Other Required Supporting Materials:
    • A maximum two paragraph biography of no more than 200 words (Biographies longer than 200 words will be reduced at the discretion of the Artistic Committee)
    • Teacher information and signature.
    • Parent or guardian information and signature.
  • All applications will open at 12:00am August 15, 2024. All applicants must submit their online audition recordings and application materials no later than 11:59pm, November 15, 2024, via getacceptd.com (link will be provided starting on August 15, 2024)
  • The preliminary screening recordings must not exceed 20 minutes of total performance time (See Repertoire Requirements). Video recordings exceeding 20 minutes of performance time will not be considered for admission.
  • Include a clear description of your entire program and order with all identifying information such as composer, title, movements, opus numbers, and exact timings (See application form)
  • If an applicant is a current or former primary student or relative of a screening or competition judge, the judge will not be permitted to vote and will be required to recuse themselves from all voting and viewing of materials for the duration of the competition. This excludes students who have participated in previous master classes or summer festivals with a competition judge.
  • Following the preliminary screening, a maximum of 25 candidates will advance to Live Round 1. These candidates will be notified no later than January 10, 2025, of their participation via getacceptd.com.
  • Video must be of high quality.
  • The video must clearly show the applicant’s hands while playing and the right side of their entire figure.
  • Each work must be uploaded in an individual file.
  • Each video must be recorded in a single, unedited take with one camera. No volume control is allowed.
  • Video should not include titles, fadeouts, or video transitions.
  • Video recording must be recorded within 6 months of submission.

 

NOTE: The Artistic Committee of Palm Springs International Piano Competition reserves the right to request an applicant to submit a new video in the event of poor technical quality.

Repertoire Requirements

NOT TO EXCEED 20 MINUTES OF PERFORMANCE TIME.

SUBMITTED VIA RECORDED PERFORMANCE.

  • Any complete Prelude and Fugue of J.S. Bach from Well-Tempered Clavier, Books 1 or 2
  • A virtuoso etude, chosen from Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, or Rachmaninoff
  • A contrasting solo piece, other than a composer chosen from 1) and 2). Complete single movements are acceptable. For multi-movement compositions, the competitor may submit more than one movement, but must remain within the total time limit.

NOT TO EXCEED 30 MINUTES OF PERFORMANCE TIME.

  • 1st or last movement only, chosen from one of the following classical sonatas:
    • Any Haydn Sonata
    • Any Mozart Sonata
  • OR:
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, op. 2, no.1
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 2 in A Major, op. 2, no. 2
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 3 in C Major, op. 2, no.3
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 4 in E Flat Major, op. 7
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 5 in C minor, op. 10, no. 1
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 6 in F Major, op. 10, no. 2
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 7 in D Major, op. 10, no. 3
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, op. 13 (Pathetique)
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 9 in E Major, op. 14, no.1
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 10 in G Major, op. 14, no. 2
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 11, in B Flat Major, op. 22
    • Beethoven Sonata No. 12 in A-Flat Major, op. 26
  • Any complete romantic or impressionistic solo piece as represented by Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, or Ravel.
  • A contrasting solo piece, other than a composer chosen from 1) and 2) in Live Round 1. Complete single movements are acceptable. For multi-movement compositions, the competitor may submit more than one movement, but must remain within the total time limit.

 

Repertoire from Preliminary Screening Round may not be repeated in Live Round 1 or 2

NOT TO EXCEED 35 MINUTES

  • Any solo work written after 1945.
  • A slow, lyrical piece, similar to a Nocturne or Intermezzo (subject to approval by PSIPC Artistic Committee)
  • • A contrasting piece, other than a composer chosen from 1) and 2) in Live Round 2. Complete single movements are acceptable. For multi-movement compositions, the competitor may submit more than one movement, but must remain within the total time limit.

 

Repertoire from Preliminary Screening Round may not be repeated in Live Round 2

One complete movement of a concerto (see concerto selections below) with second piano accompaniment. Jury will determine the movement to be performed following Live Round 2. PSIPC will provide a pianist for the accompaniment.

A complete concerto, to be performed with the PSIPC Festival Orchestra, chosen from the following list of 9 concertos:

  • Mozart Concerto No. 9 in E-Flat Major, K. 271
  • Mozart Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466
  • Mozart Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467
  • Mozart Concerto No. 27 in B-Flat Major, K. 595
  • Beethoven Concerto No. 1 in C Major op. 15
  • Beethoven Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, op. 19
  • Beethoven Concerto No. 3 in C minor, op. 37
  • Mendelssohn Concerto in G Minor, op. 25
  • Schumann Concerto in A Minor, op. 54

Prizes & Awards

  • 1st Prize – Gold Medal – Cash Award of $10,000
  • 2nd Prize – Silver Medal – Cash Award of $5000
  • 3rd Prize – Bronze Medal – Cash Award of $2500
  • 4th Prize – Medal of Honor – Cash Award of $1000
  • Cash prize award for semi-finalists who don’t reach the finals – $500

The Whittier Trust Confidence Foundation

  • Whittier Trust Audience Award Given to the Finalist Chosen by the Audience on the Final Night of the Competition; the Winner of this Award will receive $1000.
